Leather BBQ gloves for grill and kamado

At a barbecue things rarely go wrong during the cooking, but in everything around it. The grate has to go up while the coals are already glowing, the lid of a kamado gets hotter than you expect, and you would rather not grab a cast iron pan with a tea towel.

That is what these BBQ gloves are made for. Leather with a long cuff, so you can work at the fire with both hands without pulling your forearm back.

Leather or silicone at the barbecue?

Silicone wipes clean more easily and does not slip on a wet handle. Leather has another advantage: it does not melt. A spark or a glowing piece of coal that lands on it burns in at most a small spot, while plastic deforms. At a charcoal barbecue with an open flame that counts for more than being dishwasher friendly.

Grip op een heet rooster

Suède split cowhide geeft weerstand op glad staal, dus een rooster of grillrek glijdt niet uit je hand. De voering van velvet katoen aan palm en rug vertraagt de hitte zonder dat je het gevoel voor wat je vastpakt kwijtraakt.

De mouw meet 41 centimeter. Dat is precies het stuk waar je bij een kogelbarbecue overheen leunt als je kolen verdeelt, en daar komt de meeste warmte vandaan.

Wat de EN 407-score betekent

Op het label staat 4-3-X-X-X-X. De vier is brandgedrag, de drie is contacthitte en staat voor 350 graden. De X-en betekenen dat er niet getest is op onder meer gesmolten metaal, want daar is een barbecuehandschoen niet voor bedoeld.

Tip

Lighting charcoal without lighter fluid works with wood wool and wax. It is food safe, so you taste nothing of it in your food. The difference with cubes is in wood wool or firelighter cubes.

Are leather BBQ gloves better than silicone ones?

That depends on what you do. Silicone wipes clean more easily and grips better on wet handles. Leather does not melt and can take sparks and glowing ash, which happens more often at a charcoal barbecue. These gloves are suede leather, lined with cotton.

How hot can these BBQ gloves get?

They are tested to EN 407:2020 and reach level 3 on contact heat, which stands for 350 degrees. Burning behaviour scores level 4, the highest. That test was done by an independent European lab, so it is not our own promise.

How long can I hold a hot grate?

At 350 degrees you have about eighteen seconds. Below 250 degrees it is a good twenty. The gloves are meant for moving something, not for holding a hot pan for minutes.

Do they also suit a kamado?

Yes. The 41 centimetre cuff is particularly handy with a kamado, because when you open the lid your forearm passes the hot rim. They protect against dry heat, not against steam or hot liquid.

What size are the gloves?

One size, with a hand length of 22 centimetres and a hand circumference of 32 centimetres. They sit loose enough for larger hands and stay in place on average hands thanks to the wide cuff.

Can they go in the washing machine?
