Gas lighters you refill instead of throwing away

A gas lighter runs on liquid butane that you refill yourself. That is the whole difference from a disposable lighter: the device lasts for years and all you buy after that is gas.

Within that the choice varies. A soft flame is calm and economical, a jet flame burns under pressure and does not blow out. The size decides whether it fits in your trouser pocket or stays standing on the worktop.

Which gas lighter suits your use?

Disposable lighters are cheap to buy and expensive to use: you buy a handful a year and throw all of them away. A refillable gas lighter is topped up in a few seconds, and a well-kept one lasts for years as long as you fill it with clean gas.

Gas lighter with three blue jet flames held in the hand

Jet flame or soft flame

A jet flame mixes the gas in the burner itself, burns blue and stays lit outdoors. A soft flame is calmer and nicer with thin fuses and candles, but it goes out as soon as the wind picks up.

How big is the gas tank

A bigger tank mainly means refilling less often. On a model with four flames the gas goes roughly four times as fast as on one, so there the tank size counts double.

Lockable or not

A lock keeps the flame burning without you holding the button down. That is pleasant for longer work, while a child safety is handier if the lighter lies in a kitchen drawer.

Tip

Use butane gas at 45 PSI and let the gas rest for a minute after filling. Light it straight away and there is still air in it, which makes it seem broken.

Buying a gas lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds gas lighters from pocket size to table model, with one to four flames, singly and in value sets. All running on butane gas and nearly all refillable.

If you are looking for the gas itself rather than the lighter, that is under lighter gas. If you only want models you refill, have a look at the refillable lighters.

When comparing, look at the type of flame, the size of the gas tank, whether the flame is adjustable and whether it has a lock. If it will not light any more, the lighter is usually not the problem: that is in lighter not working any more.

If you are torn between a jet flame and a soft flame, let the place decide. Indoors with candles a soft flame wins because it does not blow the wick sideways, and outdoors or in a draught a jet flame is the only one that keeps going.

Frequently asked questions

Which gas goes into a gas lighter?

Liquid butane gas, preferably at 45 PSI. Less pure gas leaves residue in the valve, which makes the flame sputter. One can lasts a good while in normal use.

How do you refill a gas lighter?

Hold it upside down, press the can straight onto the valve and fill calmly until gas escapes. Then let it come up to temperature for a minute and set the flame low before you turn it up.

Why does my gas lighter not light right after filling?

Then there is air in the tank and the gas is still too cold. Wait a minute and try again. If it keeps refusing, let the remaining gas escape by pressing the valve briefly and refill.

What is the difference between a jet flame and an ordinary flame?

A jet flame blows the gas out under pressure, burns blue and does not blow out. An ordinary flame is yellow, softer and calmer with thin fuses, but it goes out easily outdoors.

Can you take a gas lighter on a plane?

The rules differ per airline and per country, and usually at most one is allowed in hand luggage. Always check beforehand with your airline and the airport, because in checked luggage it is banned almost everywhere.

Does a refillable lighter really last longer?

Yes, as long as you fill it with clean gas and do not keep the flame permanently at its highest setting. Wear is usually in the ignition mechanism, not in the tank.
